Voluntary Carbon Offsets

The voluntary carbon offset market provides businesses and individuals with the opportunity to voluntarily purchase carbon offsets to counterbalance their greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike regulated carbon markets, which operate under mandatory cap-and-trade systems, the voluntary market is driven by corporate social responsibility and consumer demand for sustainable practices. Participants typically acquire credits from projects that reduce, capture, or avoid carbon emissions, including reforestation, renewable energy initiatives, and methane capture from landfills.

Compliance Markets

The California Cap-and-Trade Program, established in 2013, imposes limits on greenhouse gas emissions from large industries to control pollution. Companies can buy or sell emission permits, known as "allowances," each representing one metric ton of carbon dioxide. This system incentivizes businesses to find effective emissions reduction strategies.

The Washington Cap-and-Invest Program, launched in 2023, regulates carbon emissions from major polluters by requiring the purchase of permits to offset their emissions. With a gradually decreasing number of permits available, the program promotes continuous emission reductions and provides flexibility through permit trading.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), formed in 2009, is a collaboration among Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The initiative requires these plants to obtain permits for their carbon dioxide emissions, with the number of permits available diminishing over time. This framework encourages the transition to more cost-effective and cleaner energy practices.

Renewable Natural Gas

The renewable natural gas (RNG) sector focuses on converting waste from agricultural operations, landfills, and wastewater treatment facilities into biogas. This biogas is refined to meet the standards of conventional natural gas and can be used for heating, industrial processes, and vehicle fuel. RNG is increasingly recognized for its role in reducing harmful emissions and supporting waste management efforts. Enhanced supportive policies are driving its adoption, making RNG a vital component of the transition to cleaner energy sources.
